In a move towards combating gender-based violence (GBV), the Kaduna State Government has reported approximately 500 cases to the National GBV Dashboard, with five cases successfully prosecuted as of the end of September.
This milestone was revealed by Jamilu Ladan, the UNFPA State Sub-Implementing Partner Coordinator at the state’s Planning and Budget Commission (PBC), during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.
Mr. Ladan credited this achievement to collaborative efforts involving development partners and civil society organizations (CSOs) dedicated to addressing GBV. He emphasized that Kaduna State, though initially lagging in reporting GBV cases, has now emerged as one of the leading states in this regard.
“As of the end of September, Kaduna State is among the leading states in terms of reporting GBV cases, amounting to about 500, of which five cases were prosecuted,” Mr. Ladan affirmed.
Reproductive Health Analyst, UNFPA Kaduna, Elvis Evborein, highlighted the multifaceted nature of GBV response, involving various stakeholders such as CSOs, government agencies, and other partners. UNFPA has played a pivotal role In supporting the state government by establishing a GBV Technical Working Group to ensure coordinated efforts.
“This partnership is mainly for prevention, such that people understand that beating women and psychosocial abuse are violations of women’s rights. We are working to address these negative social norms,” stated Mr. Evborein.
He further elaborated on UNFPA’s commitment to fostering collaboration through quarterly meetings of the technical working group, aimed at reviewing sector developments, documenting results, and finding solutions to challenges.
“We are supporting the referral pathway mechanisms available in all communities across the state,” he added.
The overarching goal Is to create a united front in tackling GBV, encompassing not only women but also young girls, children, and men. The focus extends beyond prosecution to prevention, correcting societal norms, and ensuring survivors have access to the necessary support services.
Kaduna State’s proactive approach in addressing GBV signifies a crucial step forward, showcasing the impact of collaborative efforts in the fight against gender-based violence.
